Great to see the white band Francessa - and I've also been reading your home page (in my poor German) - we both have Systems in common (and I spent a lovely week in Vienna once :-))

Hi Francessa - really interested in your page. I took the MIT weblog survey as a result. I've been teaching Stoppard's "Travesties" this year, so Joyce's teutonic connections have been on my mind. Unlike Nogbad, I've never been to Vienna, but want to go soon.

Hi Nigel,if you were able to read and understand my home page your German can't be that poor! I know Kent a little, lovely area!

Rob, one of my most intense memories of university is a term paper that included a really tough framework of questions -it was about Tom Stoppard's "The Real Thing" - but I enjoyed every minute of it.
If you really want to go to Vienna, tell me in advance - I might be able to give advice, recommendations, even a tour ;-)

Francessa - this year's holiday is already booked - the Orkney Islands again - but a city break to Wien isn't out of the question. I'll be in touch!

Beyond Britannia, where the endless ocean opens? The Orkneys are certainly much better than Vienna, especially in summer. I have never been there, but I've heard they're beautiful! Don't they have an interesting dialect?

Vienna is best in spring and autumn.

Your clock is way off, isn't it? It's about 11.20 GMT as I type this. Yes, Orkney is fascinating - go to orkneyjar.com for the best account of it. Because it was in the hands of Norway until relatively recently, gaelic has never been spoken there. The dialect - Norn - contains lots of words derived from old Norse. For me, one of the interesting aspects, apart from the neolithic burial chambers and the stone circles, is the fact that Spence is a very common name, so I am greeted like a local when we go.
Now I'm looking at my diary for October to see if i can get to Vienna...

Yes, October is usually really great!

Well, now I've set the clock, or at least tried to do so,it's 13.44.

Maybe I can manage to see the Orkneys next year, all of this sounds appealing. We're going to the Netherlands, to a small Westfrisian island by the name of Ameland. It always has to be somewhere near the sea and somewhere in the north.

Francessa -"It always has to be somewhere near the sea and somewhere in the north." - well Orkney certainly ticks all the boxes in that respect. I'm hoping to post some pictures of our visit, so watch Topsyturvydom for updates in about a month.

I certainly will! As we're leaving tomorrow I wish you a nice holiday!
