Industrial Architecture in Essen

On the weekend we went with friends to the Zeche Zollverein, the once largest colliery in the world, now a Unesco World Cultural Heritage site in Essen, Germany. Built in the 1920’s , it’s a technical and architectural masterpiece.

Beautiful, but also a reminder of the dreadful price the relatively well paid miners had to pay for their jobs: deafness, nervous diseases, lung diseases .. you name it.
