We went to the Marc Chagall exhibit in Muenster today.
“When Matisse dies,” Pablo Picasso remarked in the 1950s, “Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what color really is.” (Source: Wikipedia).
Marc Chagall (born 1887 Mark Zakharovich Shagal in Belarus, d.1985 in France) was at home in almost every artistic medium: paintings, of course, stained glass, book illustration, ceramics, tapestries, prints, woodcarving, even stage sets.
He's known for his distinctive use of color and form (as you can see in the exhibit's poster) and was influenced by Russian expressionism und French cubism before he developed his own style.
The exhibit's theme was the window as central motif in Chagall's work and as a result we saw a lot of paintings with a view.
My personal favorite was a painting with peonies and a he-goat (a recurrent symbol in his work) but I couldn't find it anywhere in the Internet to link it here.
